OLYMPIA, Wash. – Creative youth of Washington are invited to submit their artwork to the state’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Youth Art Contest this spring.

According to the DNR’s website, the theme of the contest is environmental justice, which concerns equal protection from environmental hazards for all individuals and healthy places to live, work and play.

From this theme, three topic areas are available for students to choose from, including Wildfire Resilience and Recovery, Urban Canopy Cover and Tree Equity and Responsible Recreation.

Students can use any type of artistic medium for their submission and are only allowed one entry.

Additionally, there are three different age categories that include kindergarten through fifth grade, sixth grade through seventh grade and ninth grade through 12th grade.

From each age group, a first and second-place winner will be selected. The first-place students win the chance to have their art printed on the Washington DNR’s 2024 outreach materials and will also be recognized on their website. The second-place students will win the opportunity to invite a DNR guest speaker to their class.

Photos of the artwork can be submitted online on the Washington State DNR’s Website to enter the contest. The deadline for artwork submissions is 9 p.m. on Friday, April 12.

Public voting will also be available on their website and will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 15.
