Thinking about chopping down your Christmas tree this year? Permits are available!

KAMIAH, Idaho — It may be a little early, but have you been thinking about what your Christmas tree might look like? Have you been thinking about where to chop one down? Well, the 4 million acres of land in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests is likely to have your ideal tree.

On Oct. 12, the forests began issuing Christmas tree permits that will be available until the end of 2023. You can get a permit at a local forest office in person or online using the link HERE.

Each tree costs $5 and individuals can harvest up to three trees. There is no designated area in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests for tree cutting.

But, please cut your tree at least 200 feet from well-traveled roads, flowing water, campgrounds and recreational sites. Also, don’t harvest within designated Wilderness areas or Wild and Scenic river corridors.

Lastly, be aware of winter driving when you are headed out for a tree. Bring tire chains, a first aid kit, other emergency equipment, dress in layers and bring plenty of food and water.

Most importantly, bring your holiday spirit when harvesting a Christmas tree!

This permit system will help thin out areas that are densely populated with trees, help other trees grow longer and open areas that provide forage for wildlife.

If you have questions about harvesting a Christmas tree on the National Forests, please contact your local Forest Service office. You can find their contact information and hours of operation online at their website HERE.
