SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Independent Investigation Response Team (SIIR) is investigating the shooting incident involving nine officers and one man in South Hill.

The shooting incident occurred on Jan. 31 at 6:05 p.m. when a person called 911 and reported a male had threatened to kill himself and others near Stevens and Cliff on Spokane’s South Hill.

When officers arrived on the scene, they located the suspect, who was holding a handgun in a wooded area just off the roadway. Officers attempted to talk with the suspect, who they described as being emotional.

According to SIIR the officers also requested additional assistance and equipment, including Behavioral Health Units and Crisis Negotiators, while medical personnel were requested to stage nearby.

At 6:19 p.m. the suspect raised his gun at officers and that’s when the Spokane Police Department said nine officers shot at him.

The suspect was hit by the gunfire and was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No one else was injured in this incident.

SIIR Team investigators gathered new information, including confirming the weapon the man was carrying, a Taruras 9mm semi-automatic pistol, which he had purchased in December 2023.

Investigators also recovered the man’s firearm with a loaded magazine, but no bullets in the camber, as well as additional loaded magazines near the man’s location.

The man’s name has not yet been released.
