Spokane Valley family waits for insurance coverage after driver destroys property

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash – In mid-November around 1 a.m. Austin Whitfield says a suspected drunk driver lost control and hit two of his vehicles. He says they’re lucky no one died, “we moved my cars over by our master bedroom. and luckily, because if they weren’t there, I think he would have ended up on top of me and my daughters and my wife.”

Whitfield says they were not able to get insurance information from the driver because his car was on fire and they believe their chances on getting anything from their insurance may have gone up in flames.

Whitfield says their insurance company has been less than helpful, “they told us that we can’t do anything because you don’t have a collision on your insurance. and then we actually talked to our agent and he said that he would dig into it and try to figure something out for us, but we haven’t heard from him since.”

We reached out to the Spokane County Sheriff’s office and there was a criminal report filed as well as a collision report which is used by insurance companies to determine fault and work on allocating cash.

We reached out to Whitfield’s insurance company and were told they are still looking into the incident.

Whitfield’s wife says the impact of the crash stretches farther than not being able to get around. It’s impacted her as a mother, “I cant even go to the store and get milk to lay her down, we just have to sit and wait and wait until he gets home.”

Kortnie added that after the crash they continued to pay their insurance on the cars in the hope that they would receive some money but that hasn’t happened, “it’s almost been 30 days. The insurance still, nothing from them, except we have to wait to get his insurance. But, we have to wait for the collision report and we have to wait for this and we have to wait for that and it feels like we’re in a room and it’s just frustrating.”
