Spokane River mystery: Thousands of fish found dead

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane River has thousands of dead fish floating near the dam for unknown reasons.

The dam near Long Lake turned up thousands of dead fish, and Washington officials are still trying to figure out why.

According to the Spokesman-Review, this is one of the largest fish kills in recent years.

A majority of the fish that were found were believed to be 3 years old or younger, posing a risk for future harvest and fishing seasons.

Authorities did note that they don’t believe this event is connected to the oil spill that happened earlier this year from the Inland Empire Paper Co., as the dead fish were found miles away from the spill.

Further testing on the water and the fish is being done to hopefully find a cause.

More updates on this developing story will be provided as additional information becomes available.
