Spokane restaurant awarded $20,000 grant

SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane restaurant has been awarded a $20,000 grant from American Express and Main Street America.

Indigenous Eats is one of 505 small businesses across the country to be awarded a grant.

Jenny Slagle, co-owner of Indigenous Eats said the money will be used to support Native Trivia Nights and other cultural events at the restaurants.

“Indigenous Eats has always been rooted in food, culture, and community, and this grant helps us create more spaces where people can gather, learn, laugh, and connect.” Said Slagle. ” Native Trivia Nights will highlight Native history, contemporary Indigenous culture, music, food, humor, and community knowledge in a way that is accessible, fun, and welcoming for Native and non-Native guests alike.”

Last month Indigenous Eats was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Independent Restaurant Coalition and the Chase Innovator Awards. That grant will be used to teach employees cultural cooking practices, including how to make traditional staples like their famous fry bread.

Indigenous Eats has two locations in Spokane, one in the Riverpark Square food court and one at 829 W. Boone Ave.

It’s the only restaurant in Spokane that serves Native American comfort food.
