SPOKANE, Wash. — Polo, long known as the “sport of kings,” is becoming more accessible in Spokane through a new program designed to welcome complete beginners to the field.
The Spokane Polo School launched its first Polo Experience Days this week, offering newcomers the chance to learn fundamental skills and experience the sport firsthand. The program targets absolute beginners who want to understand the basics before committing to regular lessons.
Participants in the experience days learn essential polo skills, including how to swing a mallet and ride horses under the guidance of professional instructors. The program provides a hands-on introduction that allows people to determine if polo matches their interests and abilities.
“You’re going to learn to hit the ball off the horse,” said Kyle Varner, director of the Spokane Polo School. “It’s just a little taste of what it’s like, and a chance to get to know what polo is, whether it’s for you, and how you can become a player.”
By offering introductory sessions, the school aims to demonstrate that polo can be learned by anyone willing to try.
Varner said the school hopes to continue offering these experience days throughout the summer months, depending on interest and participation levels. The initial program runs through June 1st.
The program represents a significant step toward democratizing a sport that has maintained an elite reputation for centuries, potentially opening polo to a broader range of participants in the Spokane area.
