Spokane police arrest man for water bottle theft and assaulting a clerk

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Police Department has arrested a man for stealing a water bottle and stabbing the clerk.

Police had been contacted and responded to the area of Maple and Maxwell on a report of a stabbing.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found and contacted a victim with multiple stab wounds. Employees of the business told police that a male tried to steal a water bottle and walk out of the business.

The clerks attempted to stop the man and an altercation took place in the parking lot where the male suspect stabbed the victim twice.

The stabbed victim then fled back into the store with the suspect following him but the suspect then left the location.

The victim then reported the suspect discarded some of his clothes before entering a nearby apartment building.

Officers responded, locked down the building and started their search for the suspect.

Police found the suspect who has been identified as Martel L. Stewart-Toliver, a 33-year-old who was placed under arrest for first-degree robbery and first-degree assault.

He is now booked in Spokane County Jail.
