Spokane NAACP to host town hall responding to racist incident at Wilson Elementary

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane NAACP will hold a public event regarding a racist incident at Wilson Elementary School early last week.

On March 4, parents expressed frustration after a teacher sent a newsletter to families encouraging students to “dress as hobos and slaves.”

Spokane Public Schools has opened an investigation and apologized to parents.

On March 20, Spokane’s NAACP will hold a special town hall focusing on the Wilson Elementary newsletter.

President Lisa Gardner will moderate a discussion including teachers from Adams Elementary and Lewis and Clark High School and students from Black Student Unions across Spokane.

Washington Education Association Human and Civil Rights Committee Member James Alexander will also attend the event along with Scott Finnie, a professor of Africana Studies at Eastern Washington University.

The event will take place at Central Spokane Public Library at 6:30 pm and will also be livestreamed.
