Spokane libraries hold reading challenge honoring 80 years of Smokey Bear

SPOKANE, Wash. – In celebrating Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday, the Spokane County Library District (SCLD) has announced a special reading challenge honoring wildfire prevention.

Collaborating with the USDA Forest Service, the SCLD’s Smokey Bear Reading Challenge on Beanstack gives participants the opportunity to read three books about either wildfire prevention or environmental conservation.

Beyond gaining a broader insight on taking care of the planet, readers may also earn four activity badges and exclusive Smokey Bear merchandise after completing the challenge.

Readers can select the recommended titles from the challenge’s curated list but are also welcome to explore other books of their choosing.

According to a release from the SCLD, readers must collect their merchandise at one of the following SCLD locations:

The challenge is open to all ages from April 1 through the end of October.
