Spokane law enforcement prepares enhanced security for World Cup events

SPOKANE — Spokane County law enforcement is preparing for the World Cup with enhanced security measures starting next week.

The World Cup kicks off in less than 20 days. While Spokane won’t host any matches, the city will host fan zone events and serve as the base camp for Team Egypt and its world famous midfielder Mo Salah.

Spokane Police Chief Kevin Hall says security will be enhanced throughout the city, especially around Luger Field at Gonzaga where Team Egypt will practice.

“We were able to get substantial amount of money, both for overtime costs as this will be very labor intensive for SPD, but also for some equipment to help us enhance our security posture,” Chief Hall said.

Police purchased more than $200,000 worth of vehicle barriers and extra drones for additional security around Luger Field and as the team is escorted around town by SPD’s dignitary protection team.

Police expect fans to travel to Spokane to see Team Egypt and its players.

“The only time it’s a possibility for the community to view the team as it stands now, based on the rules that we’ve been given, is during the community training event,” Chief Hall said. “Other than that, no public will be allowed in the training facilities. There will be a buffer around the training facilities that will be protected by SPD and Gonzaga security.”

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office has also purchased an explosive detection robot, a long range crowd communication device, and a platform for its air unit. Deputies will bring those upgrades to the westside to help with security for the games.

For fan zone events, security will be similar to other events at the pavilion.

“There is nothing about this event that we have seen or heard of in all of our research that is not going to be a safe, fun, healthy event for everybody in Spokane,” Chief Hall said.

FIFA is paying for all the extra equipment and officer overtime through a grant. Law enforcement agencies want the public to know this is not taking away from normal staffing levels around Spokane County.
