SPOKANE, Wash. — The sheriff deputies involved in a shooting that occurred on June 4 will now be sent to the Prosecutor’s Office to make the final legal decision.

On June 4, a man was shot and killed by Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies. The sheriff’s office said those deputies were searching for a wanted suspect at the time.

They were looking around the 6300 block of east Broadway Avenue near the Rodeway Inn in Spokane Valley.

The sheriff’s office said deputies exchanged fire with an “unknown” man, and during the exchange he was struck. SCSO said deputies provided medical aid, but the man died at the scene.

Deputies said that they found a firearm on the ground near the shooting suspect.

In keeping with standard procedure for officer-involved shootings, the Spokane Independent Investigative Response Team is investigating the incident and the two deputies involved were placed on leave. The Spokane Police Department will lead that investigation.

SPD has submitted all investigative findings such as the reports of deputies, reports of investigators, body-worn camera footage and forensic analysis to the Prosecutor’s Office.

This case has now been handed to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office, who will release their legal determination at a later date.
