SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Spokane Valley Sheriff’s deputies, with assistance from an Air-2 helicopter, arrested an 18-year-old reckless driver after attempting to flee from law enforcement.

On Nov. 18 after 10 p.m., Spokane Valley deputies attempted to stop a U-Haul pickup truck on East Sprague Avenue and Pines Road after the driver almost hit another vehicle.

18-year-old Devontaye Lyghts was driving recklessly and crossed two lanes without signaling or yielding when almost hitting another driver.

Also when deputies observed Lyghts’s driving, they believed that he was impaired. Deputies turned on their lights and attempted to pull him over when he accelerated to 75 mph to flee.

Lyghts was swerving in and out of traffic and continued speeding away from law enforcement. Multiple cars and a helicopter were continuing to follow him.

As Lyghts was driving through the area, he hit a dead end road. He then got out of his vehicle and attempted to hide behind a parked car. As the helicopter flew overhead, it spotted Lyghts and alerted law enforcement.

As deputies approached him, Lyghts fled on foot and ignored commands to stop. He got back in the U-Haul and continued driving.

Eventually, a deputy was able to deploy spike strips to stop the U-Haul. The tires went flat and stopped in a nearby parking lot.

Lyghts got out of the U-Haul again and ran on foot, jumping over a fence and into a backyard. The helicopter spotted Lyghts as deputies were able to locate him and put him in handcuffs.

18-year-old Devontaye Lyghts was booked into Spokane County Jail for attempting to elude a police vehicle, obstructing law enforcement and hit-and-run property damage.

On Nov. 20, Lyghts made his first appearance where Spokane County Commissioner ordered Lyghts to be released on his own recognizance.
