SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Flight 509, a popular family entertainment center offering laser tag, bumper cars and activities for all ages, will close permanently on June 13 after two years in business.
The closure comes just as summer break approaches and has generated significant community response, becoming the most-read story on 4 News Now website this week.
Charlene Roman, who held a membership at Flight 509, visited the facility one to two times per week with her grandchildren.
“We knew that we needed alternatives for our kids to go places so they weren’t sitting on video games and things like that,” Roman said. “We really enjoyed taking the kids there. We have a span of kids from 7 to 16 almost, and every one of them could always find something to do.”
The closure forces families to seek alternative entertainment options during hot summer months.
“Looks like what we’re going to have to change is just adding another park day in there somewhere,” Roman said. “So, it will be hard when it’s hot because it’s nice to have went in there where it was cooler.”
Hundreds of social media comments expressed disappointment. One woman shared that Flight 509 was a safe place for her son, who is on the autism spectrum.
In a statement posted to social media, the family activity center said “running a small business is hard despite best efforts” and the business “hasn’t been able to get off the ground.”
The business owners declined to speak on camera about the closure.
“I think that it would be great if people would support small business and support local companies,” Roman said.
Flight 509 will honor all scheduled private events through July 2.
