Over 150,000 Bissell vacuums recalled due fire hazards

SPOKANE, Wash. – Bissell has recalled 142,000 vacuums in the United States and additional 14,600 in Canada.

The recall involves the Multi Reach Hand and Floor Vacuum Cleaners model that had a problem with its battery pack which could overheat and eventually cause it to smoke.

Bissell had received 17 reports of the recalled vacuums smoking and emitting an odor. Six of the reports included the battery pack exploding and three causing minor property damage and two resulting in minor burn injuries.

Recalled vacuums were sold in Lowe’s, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Target, Walmart, Best Buy and other stores nationwide. They were also sold online at the Bissell’s website, Amazon, Home Shopping Network (HSN) and other online sellers. The recalled models were sold from August 2016 through December 2022 for between $110 and $270.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that “Recalled lithium-ion batteries should be disposed of in accordance with any local and state ordinances….Do not throw this recalled battery in the trash. Do not deposit this recalled battery in used battery recycling boxes found at various retail and home improvement stores.”

The Commission also added that consumers should immediately stop using these recalled vacuums and contact Bissell for instructions on how to deplete the battery charge and receive a free replacement vacuum.
