Ordinance aimed at curbing street racing gaining community support

SPOKANE, Wash.– The Spokane City Council is considering cracking down on street racing by imposing larger fines.

Council Member Paul Dillon said he saw three people street racing after last week’s council meeting and wants to keep pedestrians safe.

“I like the fast & furious movies as much as anyone,” Dillon said, “we constantly hear from constituents about this issue on our city streets. Typically, at night.”

Street racing has become an increasingly larger issue in Spokane according to Dillon.

He’s behind a new ordinance that would impose larger fines for street racing in the city which was discussed at this week’s public safety committee meeting.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office recently shared video of an arrest it made on division after a car meet.

The sheriff’s office said reckless driving is more common during and after car meets.

The way the ordinance is currently written, the first offense will be a $500 fine, then that goes up to $800 for the second offense.

The third offense and anything beyond that will result in a $1,500 fine.

The Spokane Business Association is urging the council to move forward with the ordinance.

SBA’s Director of Strategic Initiatives Gavin Cooley said, “Speed fatalities from excessive speed are exceeding deaths from homicide in spokane. So, it’s not a small or insignificant thing. You really are saving lives and you’re making the neighborhoods a lot safer.”

The ordinance said Spokane Police can use video evidence from a security camera, dash camera or cell phone video from pedestrians.

The video evidence needs to show the violation, the vehicle and the person driving.

The ordinance could be heard by the city council as soon as the beginning of June.
