SPOKANE, Wash. — One person is dead after a fire led to a possible explosion at a home in northwest Spokane on Tuesday.

According to the Spokane Fire Department (SFD), confirmed fire crews responded to reports of a fire in the 3700 Block of West Elmhurst Avenue around 6:19 p.m. SFD said neighbors told them they heard an explosion. The roof of the home also collapsed.

A heavy blaze was coming from the home, and fire crews needed to make a line to protect the surrounding houses. SFD said heavy smoke led to low visibility, making the flames challenging to put out.

SFD confirmed one person was found dead inside the home. The Spokane Police Department is on the scene helping conduct an investigation.

According to SFD, every room inside the house is damaged, and a plastic fence melted. Fire investigators could work overnight to determine what caused this fire.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available. Check back for updates.
