“Not all heroes wear capes, some drive snow plows”: Spokane’s plow drivers work through harsh winter

SPOKANE, Wash. – As weather conditions hit Spokane hard the efforts of the snowplow drivers and team don’t go unnoticed.

The City of Spokane snow response operations team sent out a full-city plow on Jan. 17. Meaning streets will be monitored 24 hours a day and will take around three days to complete.

The Spokane County, the Spokane City and the Washington State Department of transportation all work together to be able to cover as much ground as possible.

20,000 road miles collectively is the goal to reach for roads plowed according to Washington Department of Transportation.

Statewide they are equipped with around 500 plow and dump trucks.

Plowing is not as simple as it may seem either. There are five different types of road treatments that the city can use, but it all depends on the conditions.

The five types of road plow treatments are:

Anti-icingDe-icingPre-wettingSandCorrosion inhibitors

The city also works to monitor and measure the dosage of the treatments, it is crucial for road conditions in the future that only necessary amounts are used.

The City of Spokane regularly updates a plow map that tells residents exactly where they are working and the status of different roads in Spokane.

You can find the updated map here.
