SPOKANE, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Health and Welfare has partnered with other northwest states and regions to sponsor the 2024 Northwest Radon Poster Contest.

This contest’s goal is to help raise awareness of elevated indoor radon levels and promote testing and mitigation of radon gas. This contest also coincides with Radon Awareness Month and will allow kids ages 9 through 14 years old that live in Idaho, Oregon and Washington to participate.

The winners from each selected state will receive $100, while second place winners will receive $75 and third place winners will receive $50. Lastly, the regional grand prize winner will receive $300.

Radon is odorless, colorless, radioactive gas that can pose a concerning health risk if it seeps into homes and buildings. If concentrated into unhealthy levels, radon exposure can lead to lung cancer for both smokers and nonsmokers.

According to the Washington State Department of Health, radon is the single largest source of radiation exposure for nearly everyone in Washington. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. That is about 20,000 deaths per year nationwide.

The deadline to submit your posters is Wednesday Feb. 28 at 11:59 p.m.
