SPOKANE, Wash. – Coming off of a record-setting Minecraft exhibit, the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC) is opening their next main feature on Saturday: a collection celebrating the life and work of legendary Spokane artist Harold Balazs.

“This exhibit is really interesting, I haven’t seen many of these pieces, as I recall, growing up,” said Harold’s daughter Erika Balazs.

Erika Balazs says a lot of her late-father’s work is scattered around Spokane or in private collections, so to see so much of it in one place is special.

“This is a great start,” she said. “It’s got a lot of different pieces, a lot of different work, and there are so many different aspects to dad’s work that I hope will join it eventually.”

“We’re really excited to celebrate Harold’s creative legacy in the community,” said MAC Executive Director Wes Jessup. “He was an artist who was active here for decades, and even though he’s been gone for six years, his legacy lives on–artists in this community cite Harold as being a point of inspiration.”

Jessup said the museum is raising funds to purchase the Harold Balazs collection, something even more meaningful to the Balazs family, because it gives Harold’s work a home.

“It’s nice that it’s the MAC, because it’s local and it’s public, and it’s not a private museum that’s going to be overly expensive for people to go to,” Erika Balazs said.
