North Idaho family dog stolen by woman hiding under porch on Christmas

KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho – Lynn Pehrson said his wife was on the deck Christmas afternoon, taking a break, when their dog Jack wandered off the deck around the corner and hasn’t been seen since.

“Well, as she looks over to see what he’s doing, there was a lady that was laying underneath our deck,” Pehrson said.

Pehrson alleges the woman took off Jack’s leash, picked him up, ran to her car, and drove off.

Jack, a 4-year-old Cairn Terrier, usually stays on a fifteen-foot leash, which does not reach the spot they believe the woman was hiding underneath the deck when she grabbed the dog.

When police came to investigate, they found a bag of eggs and sausage supposedly used to lure the dog around the corner.

“The lady unclips the leash that we have on him, she picks the dog up, and then she takes off running,” said Pehrson.

An estimated two million pets are stolen each year in the United States, according to the American Kennel Club. Disputes over ownership and selling the animal for breeding are the most common reasons a pet is stolen.

After a Christmas day that left this household distraught, the Pehrson’s are left to wonder what went wrong, and how to bring Jack back home.

“All my wife can think about is this dog, and they’re running away and she wasn’t fast enough or couldn’t run fast enough, so she’s blaming herself,” Pehrson said.

“If you can help, if you can pass the word on, I would do it for you. If you love your dog, and I love my dog more than most folks to be honest with you. That’s where I’m at, I’m just asking for some help,” Pehrson added.

The Pehrson’s say Jack is chipped and neutered. If you have any information regarding his whereabouts, please contact the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.
