OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is opening the floor for statewide feedback on what the future of state highway preservation and maintenance will look like.

A draft of the Highway System Plan is now open for public review and comment until Monday, Dec. 18. The plan outlines the next 20 years of state highway investment strategies.

In WSDOT’s proposal, they emphasize three values: sound, safe, and smart. They state that new revenue for highways should be dedicated to preservation and maintenance, and that the remaining funds should be spent on efficiency and safety strategies and highway expansion projects.

Additionally, WSDOT outlines working towards a healthier environment through the removal of fish passage barriers, more equitable and inclusive policy decisions and alternative travel options to reduce commute trips.

Draft recommendations also include bridges and highways remaining open and in working conditions, as well as providing safer travel spaces to reduce the number of crashes.

With the plan open to the public, the WSDOT encourages individuals to view and leave feedback on the recommendations.

To comment on the draft or for more information, go to WSDOT’s Highway System Plan Website.
