Mountain pass conditions as blizzard warnings hit the Inland Northwest

WASHINGTON – Blizzard warnings throughout the Inland Northwest have caused compact snow and ice to hit our mountain passes. Winter road conditions forced multiple closures and restrictions on the mountain roadways.

Before you travel, here’s a look at mountain pass conditions in Washington and Idaho as of 5:45 p.m. on Jan. 8.

Washington Passes

Blewett Pass: Snow, slush and ice are covering the roadway causing multiple crashes and spun out semitrucks. Right now, the roadway is open but snow continues to fall and you are advised to used caution. Chains are required on all vehicles except all wheel drive, oversized vehicles are prohibited.

Snoqualmie Pass: After a day of closures, Snoqualmie Pass is currently open in both directions. Snow, slush and ice cover the roadway forcing all drivers to use chains, even if you have all wheel drive. Snow continues to fall and you should use caution in the area. Stevens Pass: Traction tires are required on Stevens Pass as the road has compact snow and ice. Vehicles over 10.000 gross vehicle weight are required to use chains. At this time, light snow is falling in that area. Visit the WSDOT website for information on Stevens Pass.

White Pass: White Pass is open with chains required on all vehicles except those with all where drive. Compact snow and ice cover the road and snow is falling. Oversized vehicles are prohibited. For the latest updates on White Pass, visit the WSDOT website.

Idaho/Montana Passes

Lookout Pass: The roads through Lookout Pass is covered in compact snow and ice. Traction tires are advised. For more information, visit the Montana Department of Transportation (DOT) website.
