Medical Lake trees planted by students to replace those lost in wildfires

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. – Fifth graders at Hallett Elementary School have planted trees to replace ones that were burned in the wildfires last year.

When the Gray Fires happened last year, the fire was only a couple of feet away from the school before it stopped. Students are doing this as part of a service-learning project and will look to continue the tradition every year.

“So this is going to be sort of a legacy project that each of our fifth-grade classes will get to be out here,” said Ben Gilsdorf, the Assistant Principal of Hallett Elementary School. “We already have trees lined up to do additional planting next year, so each year, kids from our fifth-grade classes will get to leave the area a better place.”

The trees will receive constant care as members of the Girl Scouts will help water them over the summer.
