Man shot, killed by Spokane police officer identified by Spokane County Medical Examiner

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the cause and manner of death for the man shot at a Walmart on north Colton Sunday morning.

Medical Examiner’s released that 34-year-old Kerry Jones-Hillburg died due to a gunshot wound to the torso and his manner of death was ruled as a homicide.

On Dec. 3 around 9:15 a.m., Spokane Police Department were called to the Walmart on north Colton for a man accused of shoplifting. As SPD arrived they called for backup as the suspect did not cooperate.

Officers used a taser multiple times on Jones-Hillburg to get him to cooperate.

On Tuesday afternoon, the investigative team on the case released that someone at the scene of the incident allegedly yelled “gun” prior to the shooting.

After shots were fired and a SIIR team arrived, they located a loaded firearm with additional ammunition believed to belong to Jones-Hillburg.

As Jones-Hillburg was shot, officers and additional deputies attempted life-saving measures until fire and AMR arrived. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
