SPOKANE, Wash. — The newest Spokane City Council member representing District Two, Position Two is set to be sworn in Friday evening.

Barbara Liliana Navarrete Lorenzo was appointed as council’s newest member on Jan. 22 with a 4-2 vote. She is taking over Betsy Wilkerson’s vacant seat after she was elected city council president.

Navarrete is the first Hispanic-American woman to sit on the council. She moved to Spokane from Mexico City in 1988.

After she was appointed, Council President Betsy Wilkerson said that, “Her experience and dedication to the community will be invaluable. I am proud to know that my seat is being occupied by someone who retains the same vigor and dedication to District 2 and, primarily, East Central. Her passion is needed as we work to make Spokane a better place for all.”

The ceremony will be held at Nuestras Raíces on Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. and it is free for the public to attend.
