Lewiston School District, Genesee Schools cancel classes due to gas leak in Whitman County

LEWISTON, Idaho — The Lewiston School District and Genesee School will not be holding classes on Thursday due to a gas line break that occurred near the Whitman County Landfill.

Around 12:40 p.m., an excavator hit a near-by gas line causing a gas leak. SR-195 was closed for a couple of hours but has been reopened.

Avista has released that this incident will be impacting Albion, Palouse Pullman and Lewison/Clarkston regions.

The Williams Pipeline is a natural gas system that falls between the cities of Pullman and Colfax.

For crews to safely repair this line, they will have to disconnect the gas service which will impact surrounding customers.

As a result of this gas pipeline break, the Lewiston School District schools will be without heat for the time being. The district has not decided if they will be open on Friday.

A Avista incident command team will be on scene for their planned restoration efforts and to assess the severity of impacts to the system. They will provide updates and information as they learn more.
