STEVENS PEAK, Idaho — Multiple law enforcement agencies conducted a rescue mission on Wednesday near Steven’s Peak as they received a report that three men got caught in an avalanche.

On Jan. 11 at 2:53 p.m., the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office received a Garmin GPS alert for a possible fatality on Steven’s Peak in Idaho.

The sheriff’s office organized a rescue team to find and retrieve three men who were believed to have been caught in an avalanche.

The United States Air Force, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, Silver Valley Search and Rescue and the Silver Mountain Ski Patrol all assisted the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office in their rescue effort.

Law enforcement was able to establish communications with two individuals through a GPS texting device. Through this, rescue teams were able to locate two of the men and started a targeted search near their last known location.

Two men were located by law enforcement and immediately received medical care.

As they continued their search for the third man, law enforcement received information that he may be dead at the site of the avalanche. With this information, they ended their search for the evening for the safety of everyone else involved.

They will be conducting a retrieval mission for the third missing man in the morning of Jan. 12.

At this time, the names of those involved will not be released at this time.
