SPOKANE, Wash.- The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will participate in federal relief for Spokane County wildfire victims following a Biden Administration disaster declaration opening funding to those affected by the 2023 fires.

Eligible taxpayers in Spokane County will be able to have returns and payments deferred from the due date of April 15 to June 17.

Penalties on payroll deposits and other select categories will also be postponed for certain applicants.

Applications to file for a tax extension are due on June 17 and are coordinated with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster relief.

The IRS announcement follows several new efforts by federal and state agencies to respond to increasingly damaging wildfire seasons caused by climate change. Relief for Spokane County will be distributed over several months.
