KELLOG, Idaho – An inmate was found dead in his Shoshone County jail cell after an apparent suicide earlier this month, according to the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO).

Dwayne Noel was discovered on Sept. 18 just after noon. SCSO said Noel made a makeshift noose out of a bedsheet and was found hanging inside his cell. Deputies immediately began life-saving measures while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.

Deputies restored Noel’s pulse before he was transported to Kootenai Medical Center. According to SCSO, Noel stayed on life support for about one week before dying.

Noel was arrested on Sept. 1 on drug trafficking charges and was awaiting his sentencing.

Due to the death taking place in the jail, SCSO has called on the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office to investigate this incident.

“According to the CDC, Idaho is ranked 12th in the nation for the highest suicide rate. As bad as this number is, Idaho has made traction in suicide awareness efforts in the past few years, as we used to be ranked 5th in the nation. Suicide is also the 2nd leading cause of death for our youth in Idaho,” said Shoshone County Sheriff Holly Lindsey.

If you or anyone you know are struggling and need help, call or text the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 for someone to talk to 24 hours a day.
