How Spokane planners are tackling event parking with the opening of One Spokane Stadium

SPOKANE, Wash., – One Spokane Stadium is ready for games to begin and there is a lot to be excited about.

A ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony will be held Sept. 26 at 11 a.m., and the public is encouraged to attend! Speakers will include Public Facilities District Board Chair, Marty Dickinson; Spokane Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Adam Swinyard; SPS Board President, Mike Wiser; CEO of Downtown Spokane Partnership, Emilie Cameron; and Mayor Nadine Woodward, among others.

The stadium seats about 5,000 people, and there is a layer between the turf and the cement which Greg Forsyth, SPS Capital Projects Director, calls the “e-layer.” He says it provides a cushion which lowers the risk of injury and extends the life of the field.

The first soccer and football games are set for this week! The first match on the turf will be high school soccer, Shadle Park vs Pullman! Check the full schedule for upcoming events at the One Spokane Stadium website.

One Spokane Stadium is located right next to The Podium and The Arena, causing one of the most common concerns that people bring up: where to park when they all have events at once?

Director of Entertainment with Spokane’s Public Facilities District, Matt Meyer, says there are a lot of things the City considered before drafting the parking plan now in place.

For guidance, they looked at Seattle, where Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park often have simultaneous events which draw massive crowds.

One thing Seattle does which inspired planners in Spokane was staggering events. This allows parking lots to empty right before they fill up for the next.

Meyer also mentioned most events at The Podium draw in out-of-town visitors, who stay in downtown hotels and walk across the park to the venue.

The City plans to use the old Value Village parking lot, now renamed to “Lot C,” as the primary parking lot for SPS events. To use it, you will need to print out a parking pass. Visit the SPS website or stop by the office of your kid’s school to get yours!

Meyer also says there are plenty of lots and street parking all around the arena which can be used for different events. Just take care to avoid private lots and remember to pay your meter!
