Did you happen to get a $2 bill when you were younger or just have some lying around? Don’t get rid of them now, they could be worth thousands!

According to U.S. Currency Auctions, they estimate that uncirculated $2 bills from 1890 could sell for up to $4,500. While uncirculated bills from nearly every year between 1862 and 1917 could sell for at least $1,000.

Now, these may be harder to come by. But, even bills printed in 2003 are worth almost $6,000.

Heritage Auction is the largest numismatic auction house in the world. Heritage said that they sold a $2 bill printed in 2003 for $2,400. This particular bill had a very low serial number for the 2003 series.

After that auction, it was resold for $4,000, but Heritage Auctions estimates it could now be purchased for $6,000 today!

$2 bills have had a negative reputation in the past as many thought it was associated with illegal activities, like voter bribery. The U.S. Treasury in the early 20th century made an attempt to circulate these bills, but ultimately failed.

According to the U.S. Currency Education Program, in 2017 there were 1.2 billion $2 bills worth about $2.4 billion, making them uncommon but not rare.

So when you get home, go through all of your drawers, purses, wallets or anywhere else you may have put some spare change. If you find a uncirculated 1890 $2 bill with a red seal, it is worth $4,500.

If you have newer bills with a red seal they can range from $300 – $2,500. But, if you find a brown seal on one of the bills those can be worth a few hundred dollars.
