SPOKANE, Wash. — A tradition of Spokane’s past returns! The historic Crescent window displays are back up in downtown for shoppers and the community to enjoy.

The Crescent Department Store closed down in 1992, but every Christmas it lights back up.

This year’s display is the nutcracker suite, which Byan Bogue says brings him back down memory lane. “It was absolutely magical and with all of these animated dolls in the windows,” says Bogue, “I know we brought our kids down at Christmas time to look at them and they were just mesmerized by them.”

The window figurines are back on display but with a new tradition for us to see. Liz Hooker, with the Downtown Partnership, says “We are just trying to bring it back—times change, it’s not the 1960s anymore… and we celebrate in different ways.”

As the store closed, many of the window displays ended up in a storage room and some were badly damaged. Now, these displays are slowly being refurbished and brought back to life.

“We celebrate for everyone here in downtown Spokane, so bringing back a little bit of that history for a grandparent or parent to share with their children or grandchildren it just warms the heart and hopefully builds new holiday memories ,” said Hooker.

These displays bring back happy memories of Spokane’s Christmas past. Generations are coming back and bringing their grandkids to these beautiful window displays.

Bogues mentions that he has brought his kids and grandkids to the Crescent window displays, “I was so glad to see—I never knew what happened to all of them—and to see them come out again I just am really appreciative of that.”

The Crescent window displays will operate Friday and Saturday in the afternoon and evening. Visitors can look for historic items from the old department store scattered throughout the displays.

Also, visitors will have an opportunity to enter to win a $250 gift card to downtown retailers and restaurants, courtesy of Global Credit Union. For more information about the Crescent window displays, head over to the Downtown Spokane Partnership website.
