SPOKANE, Wash. – A gas leak in Indian Trail forced Woodridge Elementary School to shelter in place and eight homes to be evacuated on Tuesday.

According to the Spokane Fire Department (SFD), a four-inch line was hit near West Shawnee Avenue and North Woodridge Drive, causing a leak.

Spokane Public Schools confirmed Woodridge Elementary School has a shelter in place due to this incident, but everyone is safe. They will continue to shelter as long as first responders are in the area. SFD said when students are cleared to leave, they will need to exit to the east of the school. Eight homes were also evacuated.

No gas has entered any structures nearby, and crews continue to monitor the area. All the gas is rising into the air, causing a lingering odor. If you’re in the area, you should expect to smell gas.

Emergency crews will be on the scene for a while; use caution around crews when in the area.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available. Check back for updates.
