Florida asks state Supreme Court to keep abortion rights amendment off the November ballot

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Lawyers trying to keep an abortion-rights measure off the Florida ballot told the state Supreme Court that the proposed amendment is deceptive. They say voters won’t realize how much it will expand access to the procedure. But justices hearing arguments Wednesday seemed to think voters will clearly see that the proposed ballot question would keep the state from restricting most abortions. The wording says abortions must remain legal until the fetus is viable or if the woman’s health needs protecting. Lawyers for Attorney General Ashley Moody and the Liberty Counsel warned that it would prevent lawmakers from regulating any aspect of the procedure. A ruling is expected by April 1.
