SPOKANE, Wash. – Higher education can open many doors and job opportunities, but the process of choosing the program and institution, applying for admission, and securing funds can be daunting. For those who feel like they’ve missed their chance due to gaps in education or poor grades in high school, it may seem downright impossible. But not so fast! If you are thinking about going or returning to college, you are in luck!

Today is NACAC National College Fair at the Spokane Convention Center. The event will have two blocks, so you can choose the time that works for your schedule. The first block runs from 9 a.m. to noon, and the second is 6-8 p.m.

Schools are busing kids from over 100 miles away to meet with over 100 local, national, and international college representatives attending the fair.

You and your family can ask questions to college advisors and representatives about how to get financial aid, scholarships, admission to the college of your dreams, and more.

It’s not just for high schoolers, and there are no age restrictions. Plus, it is free to attend!

There will be a wide-variety of programs represented, anything from culinary school to military academies, so it is highly likely you’ll find something suited to your interests!

If your GPA in high school wasn’t the best, if you did not graduate with a diploma or GED, or if there is a significant gap in your education, there are other ways for you to reach your goal of obtaining the degree you want from a college or university.

One of those ways is through community colleges. Many offer two-year and technical degrees, and some like SCC even have acclaimed programs like the Inland Northwest Culinary Academy, providing students with skills both for business and in the kitchens through the student-run Orlando Restaurant.

Community colleges are also cost-effective. Whether you’re simply looking to take care of your generals or you’re aiming for a degree, they allow you to save money while establishing your academic stability.

From there, you can transfer to a college or university and graduate when you are done, thanks to Washington state’s direct-transfer agreements. It is still imperative you talk to academic advisors at both the community college and the campus you are looking to transfer too, however, as some schools may have additional requirements.

If you did not graduate high school, you can still go to college. There are bridge programs that can get you your GED and catapult you to college depending on how you perform in the program.

If you are not sure what it takes to graduate, you can check the Spokane Public Schools graduation requirements for guidance.
