Driver dead after collision with tree on I-90 near Sprague

SPRAGUE, Wash. — One person is dead after a car crashed into a tree at the Sprague Rest Area along I-90 this morning.

On Nov. 22 around 7:30 a.m., Washington State Patrol responded to a crash on westbound I-90 near the Sprague rest area.

Once law enforcement arrived on scene, they saw that a car had struck a tree. The driver, an 82-year-old man, was in critical condition and the passenger, a 76-year-old woman, was injured. Both occupants were transported to the hospital.

Unfortunately, the driver succumbed to his injuries while being airlifted by Life Flight to the hospital.

The passenger sustained a broken ankle and wrist, but is stable at the hospital.

According to Greg Riddell, Washington State Patrol District 4 Public Information Officer, the driver was attempting to enter the rest area when the cruise control didn’t turn off. They were unable to slow down and crashed into the tree.

The reason they were turning into the rest stop is unknown at this time but the passenger told law enforcement that the driver did have medical issues.

This is an ongoing investigation. Information will be updated as we learn more.
