Downtown Spokane launches Spring Clean Week ahead of Bloomsday and Lilac Festival

SPOKANE, Wash. — Downtown Spokane is preparing for a busy month as the city gears up for Bloomsday and the Lilac Festival. Starting today, community members are invited to help beautify the area through the annual Spring Clean Week.

The volunteer initiative allows people to spend their lunch breaks beautifying the downtown area alongside the organization’s year-round clean team.

“We call this our deep clean, just like when you get ready for guests. Downtown is getting ready for guests. We are going to really dig into the corners and get all of the grime that’s built up over the winter,” said Elisabeth Hooker with the Downtown Spokane Partnership.

Volunteers can register individually or as a team. Participants check in at the DSP office located at 818 West Riverside Avenue.

Volunteer activities include litter pickup, preparing flower planters for the growing season, and removing graffiti.

“We are focusing on alleyways and parking lots. Places that our clean team, which is down seven days a week, don’t normally get to,” Hooker said.

The volunteer event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, April 27, through Thursday, April 30. DSP says it will work with student volunteers from the Community School on Friday, May 1st, to bring Lilac Lane back to Main Avenue.

All necessary cleaning equipment will be provided by the city’s water department, and volunteers will receive complimentary snacks and drinks during their service.

For those who prefer to contribute financially rather than through hands-on volunteering, the Downtown Spokane Partnership offers a planter sponsorship program. Community members can sponsor a downtown planter for $50, a tax-deductible donation that allows them to name a planter in honor of a person or organization.
