SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – A man was arrested Tuesday morning after a SWAT standoff in Spokane Valley.

Deputies with the Spokane Valley Police Department had probable cause to arrest a domestic violence suspect for second-degree felony malicious mischief in connection to an incident the day before.

On Nov. 20, law enforcement was told the suspect was having self-harming ideations and was armed with a gun. He told law enforcement he would shoot them if they responded.

Suspect Travis C. Torman, 50, was approached by police at a Spokane Valley home around 7:45 a.m. on Nov. 1. Deputies responded to the 300 block of South McDonald Road, where Torman’s car was seen outside the home. Deputies observed Torman inside with what appeared to be a pistol.

SWAT and crisis negotiators were called as deputies lined a perimeter around the home and authorized a search warrant. Torman was told he was under arrest and was advised to surrender peacefully, but failed to do so.

A search warrant was obtained, and with all other attempts to de-escalate the situation, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said chemical irritants were introduced into the home. When Torman left the house, he still refused to follow directions from law enforcement.

Eventually, SWAT team members took him into custody, where he was booked on second-degree malicious mischief. The item that appeard to be a handgun was a homemade object meant to look like a pistol.
