Court docs: Whitman County first grade teacher admitted having sex with high school student

COLFAX, Wash – A first grade teacher from the St. John School District admitted to having sex with a 16-year-old student, according to court documents filed in Whitman County Court.

Deputies arrested 26-year-old Mackenzie Naught over the weekend and charged her with sexual misconduct with a minor.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Naught’s husband was the one who turned her in.

Investigators say Naught’s husband found phone messages confirming his wife had sex with the teenager.

Naught teaches first grade at the school and has since 2025. The teenager goes to the same K-12 school.

When investigators first questioned Naught, she denied the relationship.

When asked about Snapchat and text messages that seemed to confirm some sort of relationship, investigators say Naught told them she was intoxicated and on medication and it made things “fuzzy.”

Deputies say while Naught denied to them that she had sex with the teenager, they say she admitted it to her husband and her friend. They also say they have messages that show the teenager confirmed the sex to Naught’s husband. They used that information to justify arresting her.

Investigators then questioned the teenager. He told them about a sexual encounter in his truck.

Deputies then re-interviewed Naught, who admitted having sex with the teenager.

She said she knew it was wrong and that’s why she told the teenager not to tell anyone.
