Congress reaches deal on 2024 budget to avoid government shutdown

WASHINGTON – Congress reached a deal on Sunday in a continued attempt to avoid a government shutdown, NBC News reported.

The deal establishes an overall spending budget of $1.59 trillion in the fiscal year 2024. $886 billion is slated for military spending, while the other $704 billion would go towards nondefense spending.

While the agreements marks an important step in the budget process, the two sides still have to do more work to avoid a looming government shutdown. Without an approved budget, part of the government would run out of funding on Jan. 19.

To avoid a shutdown, the Democratic-controlled Senate and Republican-controlled House will have to agree on allocating funds. Then, they must write legislation and pass it through both chambers.
