Commercial drivers training in snowy conditions

SPOKANE VALLEY, WA – Josh Munderloh an instructor at DRIVE509 a commercial driving licensing school says he’s teaching his students how to deal with the inevitable, “we get lots of snow up here every year, it always happens. It’s not an if or maybe it’s a it’s a when.”

DRIVE509 provides training for those looking to get a commercial driver’s license also known as a CDL. They provide training for Class A and Class B CDLs as well as other extended programs for commercial drivers.

Munderloh says training in these snowy conditions is ideal because, unlike their vehicles, the weather sometimes doesn’t signal when it could take a turn for the worst, “a lot of times the weather it turns on you right away. Sometimes you gotta just keep driving through.”

That’s why student Dallen Hillyer says he chose to enroll in training when conditions posed some challenges, “it’s really important to know what we’re going to be experiencing when we’re out working.”

According to the Federal Highway Administration’s most recent report between 2006- 2016, there were close to two – hundred and twenty thousand crashes involving all types of vehicles in sleet and snow across the United States. This is why Munderloh says it’s important they teach their student when to pump the brakes, literally.

“We do encourage the students to recognize when the conditions get so bad to where you need to shut your truck down,” said Munderloh.
