MOSCOW, Idaho – Every year, the City of Moscow is required to flush the water system to ensure the water is safe to drink.

According to the City of Moscow Idaho, the flushing will begin on Monday, Oct. 9, through Friday, Oct. 20 and will be performed between 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. based on the following schedule:

Oct. 9 – 10

Main Street west to the City Limits between D Street and Taylor Avenue.

Oct. 11 – 12

D Street north to the City Limits between Almon Street and Polk Street and from Taylor Avenue south to Palouse River Drive. To include the Frontier addition.

Oct. 12 – 13

6th Street is north to the City limits between Polk Street and Mountain View Road, including the Fort Russell Area.

Oct. 16 – 17

6th Street south to the Troy Highway and east to Mountain View Road to include the Indian Hills Addition.

Oct. 18 –20

Everything east of Mountain View Road from the north to the south City Limits.

During flushing, the City of Moscow says there will be water in the roadway, and drivers should be cautious when driving through these areas.

Moscow’s water is drawn from an aquifer system, meaning that the system is naturally high in iron. While this is safe, it can cause red/brown discoloration in water.

The annual flushing aims to minimize iron flocculation buildup in the distribution system. The system is flushed by using fire hydrants and designed flushing equipment.

After City flushing is complete, Moscow residents are recommended the following:

-Run cold water for 10 – 15 minutes to clear lines.

-Run hot water for several minutes to ensure the lines are clear.

-Residents with water softeners or whole house filters should perform a regular maintenance check after flushing is complete.

Residents who experience water discoloration and do not see an improvement after running cold water should call the Moscow Water Department at 208-882-3122.

If you have any questions, or to report problems, or if water discoloration continues for an extended period, customers may call the Moscow Water Department between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 208-882-3122.
