City government explores ways of making Spokane more bike-friendly

SPOKANE, Wash.- The City of Spokane is moving forward with a plan to create an integrated network of bike paths.

The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood City Council shared a feedback form on Feb. 12 requesting public input on Spokane’s future Bicycle Priority Network (BPN), which aims to connect major bike paths across the area.

The BPN, which is a result of the city’s 2017 plan outlining the future of Spokane’s infrastructure development, is currently in the information collecting stage.

Throughout the winter and spring, a consulting group will collect public data on which biking routes are most utilized, and what changes to bicycle accessibility could yield positive changes. A map available online shows potential BPN pathways and public comments on the plan.

Previous examples of Bicycle Priority Networks include those implemented in Washington, D.C and Edmonton.

If the planned BPN progresses to completion, it has the potential to decrease carbon emissions in the Lilac City while creating more biking opportunities for cyclists.
