PAYETTE NATIONAL FOREST, Id. — Trail cameras set up in the Payette National Forest are giving biologists a glimpse into the lives of wolverines living in the forest.
U.S. Forest Service biologists set up seven cameras in the fall and then left them along for winter in hopes the cameras would catch a snapshot of the life of wolverines.
When wildlife technicians collected the cameras in the spring, they found what they were looking for.
Baited trees worked to attract wolverines to right in front of the cameras.
Biologists are working to estimate the total population in the forest using DNA.
The U.S. Forest Service said wolverines are secretive, elusive animals that most people have never seen in the wild. They are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
