Beginner-friendly springtime races in Spokane for aspiring Bloomsday runners

SPOKANE, Wash. – Were you hoping to run Bloomsday this year but fell short on your training? Don’t fret — there are still plenty of upcoming races in the Spokane area geared toward novice and intermediate runners.

Deer Park’s annual Sunflower 5k is just over three weeks away on Saturday, May 18. Organized to celebrate the coming of spring in the northwest, runners are encouraged to dress in yellow or other spring colors. Interested runners can either register online or in person on the day of the race. Registration costs $35 per person and runners who register before Sunday, May 5 are guaranteed a T-shirt. The race will begin at 11 a.m.

Also on Saturday, May 18 are several races put on by Mermaid Series in Spokane, including a ten mile run starting at 7:30 a.m., a 10K starting at 8 a.m., a 5K at 8:30 a.m. and a 1.5 mile Mermaid Dash for kids’ ages 6 to 12 starting at 10 a.m. Starting and finishing in Riverfront Park, the race’s registration fees are $79 for the ten mile run, $69 for the 10K, $59 for the 5K and $15 for the Mermaid Dash. A virtual option is also available for the first three races, costing $59 for each. Youth 19 and under receive a 20 percent registration discount.

In addition to Spokane’s Windermere Marathon and half marathon on Sunday, May 19, there will also be a 10K, 5K and kids’ 1 mile run. Registration fees for the runs are $25 for the kids 1 mile run, $55 for the 5K and $75 for the 10K. A $65 event fee is required for all virtual runners.

Celebrate Memorial Weekend by either running or walking in Fairmount Memorial Association’s Race to Remember 5K. The race will take place at Riverside Memorial Park on Saturday, May 25 at 10 a.m. All proceeds from the race will benefit Meals on Wheels Spokane who will use the funds to provide meals to veterans and their families. Registration is $25 per runner.

This year’s Girls on the Run Spokane celebratory 5K is set for Saturday, June 1. Youth registration is $15 and only $30 for adults. The race will begin at 9 a.m. at Riverside Memorial Park. Girls on the Run pre-race festivities will begin at 8 a.m.

Elevations, a non-profit in Spokane Valley assisting children with special needs will be holding their sixth annual Stache Dash races on Saturday, June 8. A total of six different races will be held, including:

A wheelchair 5K race at 8:45 a.m., $25 to registerA 10K at 9 a.m., $45 to registerAn all-ages 5K at 9:15 a.m., $25 to registerA 5K for kids ages 11 and younger at 9:15 a.m., $15 to registerA quarter-mile kids’ race at 8:45 a.m., $10 to register A half marathon at 8 a.m., $75 to register

The races will take place at Farwell Elementary School in Spokane.

Re*Imagine Medical Lake, an community-based organization working to promote economic and communal revitalization in the city, is holding a Trailblazer 5K race in addition to their triathlon and duathlons on Saturday, June 15 in Coney Island Park. The 5K will begin at 1 p.m. and costs $25 to register.

Spokane Neighborhood Action Partners (SNAP) will be holding their 12th annual Dad’s Day Dash on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16 at Riverfront Park. A 5K and 1 mile fun run and walk. Both the 5K and 1 mile events cost $25 per person to register. A virtual option is also available and costs $25.
