Spokane, WASH, – Every year Kaiser Permanente sponsors “America’s Healthiest Schools,” and this year a Spokane Public School has been chosen as one of this year’s healthiest school!

This is one of the longest-running national recognition programs honoring schools for their achievements in supporting the whole health needs of students and school staff.

The annual awards recognize schools for implementing best practices and policies in up to nine topics related to advancing the physical, mental and social-emotional health of students, staff and families.

In 2023, 781 schools across 36 states were recognized, including Audubon Elementary in Spokane, Washington!

A large reason why Audubon was chosen was because of their food security. The school offers a community vegetable garden, Bite 2 Go (a weekend food bag program) and Go-Slow-Whoa (a second chance breakfast nutrition education program).

Those factors contributed to just one of the six topic areas Audubon was recognized for excelling in.

Audubon was also recognized for:

Cultivating staff well-beingIncreasing family and community engagementBolstering physical education and activitySupporting school health servicesStrengthening social0-emotional health and learning.

Audubon partners with a local food bank and works with community health facilities, providing referrals to help meet students’ individual vision, dental, hearing and other medical needs.
