Asbestos potentially located in Sandpoint Middle, High Schools

SANDPOINT, Idaho – Sandpoint Middle School and High School experienced a water leak on Wednesday that altered students’ schedules.

Lake Pend Oreille School District (LPOSD) superintendent, Dr. Becky Meyer specified in a Facebook post, that a water line above the hallway ceiling at Sandpoint Middle School sprung a leak on Feb. 14.

When the water leak was identified LPOSD facilities shut down the water and started working on repairs and assessing damage.

During this process, the facilities crew discovered wet and very old insolation above the light fixture ceiling.

She later added that the insulation area was closed and undisturbed but that area had asbestos.

Which is a mineral that if ingested or inhaled can over time cause inflammation, scarring and cancer.

Meyer said that the area was abated for asbestos but “out of an abundance of caution, have completely sealed off that area.”

An abatement expert came in on Feb.14 and the school district is still waiting for results to come in.

Middle school students had a remote learning day on Feb. 14 while high school students came in person that day.

On Thursday middle school students came in person while high school students where online.
