Americans shift rightward on LGBTQ+ issues

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Americans have more conservative attitudes on LGBTQ+ issues than past years according to new polling data.

According to data released by the Public Religion Research Institute on March 12, support for anti-discrimination laws protecting LGBTQ+ people fell by 4 percent from 2022 to 2023, and rests at 76 percent.

Support for marriage equality dropped from 69 to 67 percent over the same time frame.

Notably, the amount of young people who support same sex marriage has been on a decline since 2018 despite 22 percent of Americans ages 18 to 29 identifying as LGBTQ+, more than any other age category.

It is unclear what has caused the public shift in attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community.
