A new bill in Olympia aims to protect referees

OLYMPIA, Wash. – A new bill to protect referees is making its way around the desk in Olympia.

According to our partners at the Spokesman Review, the bill would make threatening violence or intimidation against school employees, volunteers or students officiating sporting events a felony.

If convicted, the perpetrator could face up to five years in jail or a $10,000 fine. In addition, students would be removed from a school and barred from sporting events for a year.

The year ban would also apply to adults convicted.

As of right now, there is no timeline if or when this bill will go into effect.
